NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick in 'Exotic' |
Hello, hiya, bonjour! How is everyone's week going so far? About a month ago, I wrote a review on another one of these Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks from NYX, where I expressed my disliking of the formula, color, pretty much everything. I was not impressed.
Well, I had mentioned in the review that the other shade I owned from the Lingerie collection performed better for me, and this beautiful mahogany, oddly named 'Exotic,' (eh? not really what I would name a color like this) happens to be that shade I was talking about. You'll be able to understand from the lip swatches, so ya might wanna take a look!

Color & Formula
'Exotic' is a warm-toned mahogany red with strong brown undertones and a bit of spice to it. It's a fairly neutral red, so I suppose I can see why it's in this lineup of risque, seductive neutral shades. Many people look at this as the oddball weirdo of the collection, but I think it pulls enough brown to warrant its own rightful place as claiming the spotlight title of The Vixen of the bunch, as reds so commonly are. I found that this shade offered enough depth to my lips, much unlike 'Bedtime Flirt,' which is its chalkier, more stubborn cousin.
The formula of this one is pretty much identical to the formula of the other one: it offers the same mousse consistency, a bit like the Soft Matte formula. However, the Lingeries are perhaps more concentrated, and appear much less goopy than the Soft Mattes from the onset. On the other hand, I found that this one in Exotic dried down much more quickly than the other one called Bedtime Flirt, clocking in at around a 15-20 second drydown, on average, whereas it took closer to a minute to get complete, non-transfer color on the other one. So that's where the other one suffers, and this one wins!
Packaging
I had sung the praises of the weighty, substantial packaging in my last review, so won't go into much more detail, other than expounding upon it a bit and pointing out that the lettering and print on these tubes has not worn down or flaked off at all. I've had these for a good 5 months, being jostled around in my purse, so after that long, you bet the packaging gets a thumbs up from me! The wand always disperses the same amount of product every time, and the double-sided flattened paddle-shaped applicator applies the product smoothly and very precisely.
Application & Scent
This deeper shade was much more forgiving in application and its lack of sinking into my lip lines was nothing short of mesmerizing, as the other one was dreadful in that regard. Eeek. But rest assured that this one applies flawlessly, and while it still takes two coats to get opaque color, I didn't find that it was nearly as patchy as the other one. There are just some formulas that you have to be time-sensitive with, as you just can't let the first layer dry completely before going in for the second layer, or else your lips will look like...you know. With these, don't even let the formula marinate for even an extra few seconds after you apply the first round. If you want a second coat, apply it quickly.
Much like the other one, this had no scent whatsoever!
How Does it Wear?
'Exotic' lasts around 4.5-5.5 hours on me. It still feels slightly sticky (but still very dry!) after it's been on the lips a while, and I do have qualms with that. I'd rather not feel as though I were wearing a tacky layer of Elmer's glue mixed with translucent setting powder on my lips, and this can feel like that. It makes my equilibrium feel a bit off-kilter.
This does last through an entire meal, though when it fades, it doesn't fade very gracefully. And it certainly doesn't stain the lips once it does. I can feel it clump up and get a bit gummy when I lick my lips, and it just feels a bit like glue. I didn't have any problems with the color transferring onto anything, and it certainly didn't sink into the lines and crevices of my mouth until 4 hours or so had passed (in which case I just took a matte lip balm and smoothed it over my lips with my finger, which would also smooth out the liquid lipstick), nor did it bleed outside of my lip line at any point.
This doesn't melt right off like the other one does, it hangs around for a bit, but as far as appearance goes, removing and reapplying is an absolute must.
Price & Availability
Overall Rating
I'll give this one a 6.5/10. It would get a solid 8/10 if it weren't for the gummy, glue-like texture it adopts after being worn a while. The color is beautiful, and it wears fairly nicely and for a fair amount of time, I just have to knock it down for uncomfortable wear with the sticky texture.
What do you all think of these lipsticks? What are some of your favorite shades? Have you tried any of the new shades that just came out?
